Ramkumar Vadivelu 9a690a74e1 In ParseInternalKey(), include corrupt key info in Status (#7515)
Summary:
Fixes Issue https://github.com/facebook/rocksdb/issues/7497

When allow_data_in_errors db_options is set, log error key details in `ParseInternalKey()`

Have fixed most of the calls. Have few TODOs still pending - because have to make more deeper changes to pass in the allow_data_in_errors flag. Will do those in a separate PR later.

Tests:
- make check
- some of the existing tests that exercise the "internal key too small" condition are: dbformat_test, cuckoo_table_builder_test
- some of the existing tests that exercise the corrupted key path are: corruption_test, merge_helper_test, compaction_iterator_test

Example of new status returns:
- Key too small - `Corrupted Key: Internal Key too small. Size=5`
- Corrupt key with allow_data_in_errors option set to false: `Corrupted Key: '<redacted>' seq:3, type:3`
- Corrupt key with allow_data_in_errors option set to true: `Corrupted Key: '61' seq:3, type:3`

Tomasz Posluszny 05fba96927 Make RocksDB instance responsible for closing associated ColumnFamilyHandle instances (#7428)
Summary:
- Takes the burden off developer to close ColumnFamilyHandle instances before closing RocksDB instance
- The change is backward-compatible

----
Previously the pattern for working with Column Families was:

```java
try (final ColumnFamilyOptions cfOpts = new ColumnFamilyOptions().optimizeUniversalStyleCompaction()) {
  // list of column family descriptors, first entry must always be default column family
  final List<ColumnFamilyDescriptor> cfDescriptors = Arrays.asList(
      new ColumnFamilyDescriptor(RocksDB.DEFAULT_COLUMN_FAMILY, cfOpts),
      new ColumnFamilyDescriptor("my-first-columnfamily".getBytes(), cfOpts)
  );
  // a list which will hold the handles for the column families once the db is opened
  final List<ColumnFamilyHandle> columnFamilyHandleList =
      new ArrayList<>();
  try (final DBOptions options = new DBOptions()
      .setCreateIfMissing(true)
      .setCreateMissingColumnFamilies(true);
       final RocksDB db = RocksDB.open(options,
           "path/to/do", cfDescriptors,
           columnFamilyHandleList)) {
    try {
      // do something
    } finally {
      // NOTE user must explicitly frees the column family handles before freeing the db
      for (final ColumnFamilyHandle columnFamilyHandle :
          columnFamilyHandleList) {
        columnFamilyHandle.close();
      }
    } // frees the column family options
  }
} // frees the db and the db options
```

With the changes in this PR, the Java user no longer has to worry about manually closing the Column Families, which allows them to write simpler symmetrical create/free oriented code like this:

```java
try (final ColumnFamilyOptions cfOpts = new ColumnFamilyOptions().optimizeUniversalStyleCompaction()) {
  // list of column family descriptors, first entry must always be default column family
  final List<ColumnFamilyDescriptor> cfDescriptors = Arrays.asList(
      new ColumnFamilyDescriptor(RocksDB.DEFAULT_COLUMN_FAMILY, cfOpts),
      new ColumnFamilyDescriptor("my-first-columnfamily".getBytes(), cfOpts)
  );
  // a list which will hold the handles for the column families once the db is opened
  final List<ColumnFamilyHandle> columnFamilyHandleList =
      new ArrayList<>();
  try (final DBOptions options = new DBOptions()
      .setCreateIfMissing(true)
      .setCreateMissingColumnFamilies(true);
       final RocksDB db = RocksDB.open(options,
           "path/to/do", cfDescriptors,
           columnFamilyHandleList)) {
        // do something
    } // frees the column family options, then frees the db and the db options
  }
}
```

**NOTE**: The changes in this PR are backwards API compatible, which means existing code using the original approach will also continue to function correctly.

Tomasz Posluszny 6528ecc800 Add event listeners to RocksJava (#7425)
Summary:
Allows adding event listeners in RocksJava.

* Adds listeners getter and setter in `Options` and `DBOptions` classes.
* Adds `EventListener` Java interface and base class for implementing custom event listener callbacks - `AbstractEventListener`, which has an underlying native callback class implementing C++ `EventListener` class.
* `AbstractEventListener` class has mechanism for selectively enabling its callback methods in order to prevent invoking Java method if it is not implemented. This decreases performance cost in case only subset of event listener callback methods is needed - the JNI code for remaining "no-op" callbacks is not executed.
* The code is covered by unit tests in `EventListenerTest.java`, there are also tests added for setting/getting listeners field in `OptionsTest.java` and `DBOptionsTest.java`.

Arkady Dyakonov 2bc63e3aba Fix Java test for uint64add merge operator (#7243)
Summary:
The PR fixes a Java test for Merge operator `uint64add`.

The current implementation uses wrong byte order for long serialization, but fails to catch this error because the merge sum is lower than `256`.

The PR makes this test case more representative (i.e. it fails with wrong byte order) and changes the byte order to little endian.

Some background: RocksDB uses LittleEndian byte order for integer serialization across all platforms. `MergeTest` uses `ByteBuffer` that defaults to BigEndian byte order.

This test case might probably be used as a sample of `MergeOperator` usage in Java.

Aaron Kabcenell 56ed601df3 Compaction Read/Write Stats by Compaction Type (#7165)
Summary:
Adds compaction statistics (total bytes read and written) for compactions that occur for delete-triggered, periodic, and TTL compaction reasons.

Pull Request resolved: https://github.com/facebook/rocksdb/pull/7165

Test Plan:
TTL and periodic can be checked by runnning db_bench with the options activated:

/db_bench --benchmarks="fillrandom,stats" --statistics --num=10000000 -base_background_compactions=16 -periodic_compaction_seconds=1
./db_bench --benchmarks="fillrandom,stats" --statistics --num=10000000 -base_background_compactions=16 -fifo_compaction_ttl=1

Setting the time to one second causes non-zero bytes read/written for those compaction reasons. Disabling them or setting them to times longer than the test run length causes the stats to return to zero as expected.

Delete-triggered compaction counting is tested in DBTablePropertiesTest.DeletionTriggeredCompactionMarking

Nicolas Pépin-Perreault 9e6f3efcd2 Add RocksIterator::Refresh (#6573)
Summary:
This PR exposes the `Iterator::Refresh` method to the Java API by adding it on the `RocksIteratorInterface` interface. There are three concrete implementations: `RocksIterator`, `SstFileReaderIterator`, and `WBWIRocksIterator`. For the first two cases, the JNI side simply delegates to the underlying `Iterator::Refresh` method; in the last case, as it doesn't share an ancestor, and per the discussion in https://github.com/facebook/rocksdb/issues/3465, a `Status::NotSupported` exception is thrown.

As the last PR had no activity in a while, I'm opening a new one - I'm completely fine with merging the previous PR if it gets completed before this is reviewed.

Peter Dillinger 85dbdf2586 Use an Amazon S3 bucket for downloading deps (#6526)
Summary:
After we had a lot of failures with maven.org downloads, we
wanted an alternative location for downloading binary dependencies.
Hosting them through github would have been good in terms of
organizational and network dependencies, but that approach seems to be
awkward (fake releases, so would need a 'rocksdb-deps' repo) and
strangely complicated for Facebook policy on open source repositories.

This commit moves the downloads (that are not officially hosted by
others on github) from my personal rocksdb fork to an S3 bucket owned
by the Facebook RocksDB AWS account. Facebook employees can access
this through an internal tool, and we should be able to grant permission
to outside collaborators.

Assuming this works out, I will back-port to older branches to stabilize
their CI testing as well.

To ensure our RocksJava builds are working, we now instead install and use OpenJDK 8. Ideally we would use OpenJDK 7, as RocksJava supports Java 7, but many of the newer Travis containers don't support Java 7, so Java 8 is the next best thing.

sdong fdf882ded2 Replace namespace name "rocksdb" with ROCKSDB_NAMESPACE (#6433)
Summary:
When dynamically linking two binaries together, different builds of RocksDB from two sources might cause errors. To provide a tool for user to solve the problem, the RocksDB namespace is changed to a flag which can be overridden in build time.

Mike Kolupaev 637e64b9ac Add an option to prevent DB::Open() from querying sizes of all sst files (#6353)
Summary:
When paranoid_checks is on, DBImpl::CheckConsistency() iterates over all sst files and calls Env::GetFileSize() for each of them. As far as I could understand, this is pretty arbitrary and doesn't affect correctness - if filesystem doesn't corrupt fsynced files, the file sizes will always match; if it does, it may as well corrupt contents as well as sizes, and rocksdb doesn't check contents on open.

If there are thousands of sst files, getting all their sizes takes a while. If, on top of that, Env is overridden to use some remote storage instead of local filesystem, it can be *really* slow and overload the remote storage service. This PR adds an option to not do GetFileSize(); instead it does GetChildren() for parent directory to check that all the expected sst files are at least present, but doesn't check their sizes.

We can't just disable paranoid_checks instead because paranoid_checks do a few other important things: make the DB read-only on write errors, print error messages on read errors, etc.
Pull Request resolved: https://github.com/facebook/rocksdb/pull/6353

Test Plan: ran the added sanity check unit test. Will try it out in a LogDevice test cluster where the GetFileSize() calls are causing a lot of trouble.

Adam Retter 7242dae7fe Improve RocksJava Comparator (#6252)
Summary:
This is a redesign of the API for RocksJava comparators with the aim of improving performance. It also simplifies the class hierarchy.

**NOTE**: This breaks backwards compatibility for existing 3rd party Comparators implemented in Java... so we need to consider carefully which release branches this goes into.

Previously when implementing a comparator in Java the developer had a choice of subclassing either `DirectComparator` or `Comparator` which would use direct and non-direct byte-buffers resepectively (via `DirectSlice` and `Slice`).

In this redesign there we have eliminated the overhead of using the Java Slice classes, and just use `ByteBuffer`s. The `ComparatorOptions` supplied when constructing a Comparator allow you to choose between direct and non-direct byte buffers by setting `useDirect`.

In addition, the `ComparatorOptions` now allow you to choose whether a ByteBuffer is reused over multiple comparator calls, by setting `maxReusedBufferSize > 0`. When buffers are reused, ComparatorOptions provides a choice of mutex type by setting `useAdaptiveMutex`.

 ---
[JMH benchmarks previously indicated](https://github.com/facebook/rocksdb/pull/6241#issue-356398306) that the difference between C++ and Java for implementing a comparator was ~7x slowdown in Java.

With these changes, when reusing buffers and guarding access to them via mutexes the slowdown is approximately the same. However, these changes offer a new facility to not reuse mutextes, which reduces the slowdown to ~5.5x in Java. We also offer a `thread_local` mechanism for reusing buffers, which reduces slowdown to ~5.2x in Java (closes https://github.com/facebook/rocksdb/pull/4425).

These changes also form a good base for further optimisation work such as further JNI lookup caching, and JNI critical.

 ---
These numbers were captured without jemalloc. With jemalloc, the performance improves for all tests, and the Java slowdown reduces to between 4.8x and 5.x.

Adam Retter 6477075f2c JMH microbenchmarks for RocksJava (#6241)
Summary:
This is the start of some JMH microbenchmarks for RocksJava.

Such benchmarks can help us decide on performance improvements of the Java API.

At the moment, I have only added benchmarks for various Comparator options, as that is one of the first areas where I want to improve performance. I plan to expand this to many more tests.

Details of how to compile and run the benchmarks are in the `README.md`.

A run of these on a XEON 3.5 GHz 4vCPU (QEMU Virtual CPU version 2.5+) / 8GB RAM KVM with Ubuntu 18.04, OpenJDK 1.8.0_232, and gcc 8.3.0 produced the following:

```
# Run complete. Total time: 01:43:17
REMEMBER: The numbers below are just data. To gain reusable insights, you need to follow up on
why the numbers are the way they are. Use profilers (see -prof, -lprof), design factorial
experiments, perform baseline and negative tests that provide experimental control, make sure
the benchmarking environment is safe on JVM/OS/HW level, ask for reviews from the domain experts.
Do not assume the numbers tell you what you want them to tell.
Peter Dillinger 57f3032285 Allow fractional bits/key in BloomFilterPolicy (#6092)
Summary:
There's no technological impediment to allowing the Bloom
filter bits/key to be non-integer (fractional/decimal) values, and it
provides finer control over the memory vs. accuracy trade-off. This is
especially handy in using the format_version=5 Bloom filter in place
of the old one, because bits_per_key=9.55 provides the same accuracy as
the old bits_per_key=10.
This change not only requires refining the logic for choosing the best
num_probes for a given bits/key setting, it revealed a flaw in that logic.
As bits/key gets higher, the best num_probes for a cache-local Bloom
filter is closer to bpk / 2 than to bpk * 0.69, the best choice for a
standard Bloom filter. For example, at 16 bits per key, the best
num_probes is 9 (FP rate = 0.0843%) not 11 (FP rate = 0.0884%).
This change fixes and refines that logic (for the format_version=5
Bloom filter only, just in case) based on empirical tests to find
accuracy inflection points between each num_probes.
Although bits_per_key is now specified as a double, the new Bloom
filter converts/rounds this to "millibits / key" for predictable/precise
internal computations. Just in case of unforeseen compatibility
issues, we round to the nearest whole number bits / key for the
legacy Bloom filter, so as not to unlock new behaviors for it.
Zhongyi Xie 2f41ecfe75 Refactor trimming logic for immutable memtables (#5022)
Summary:
MyRocks currently sets `max_write_buffer_number_to_maintain` in order to maintain enough history for transaction conflict checking. The effectiveness of this approach depends on the size of memtables. When memtables are small, it may not keep enough history; when memtables are large, this may consume too much memory.
We are proposing a new way to configure memtable list history: by limiting the memory usage of immutable memtables. The new option is `max_write_buffer_size_to_maintain` and it will take precedence over the old `max_write_buffer_number_to_maintain` if they are both set to non-zero values. The new option accounts for the total memory usage of flushed immutable memtables and mutable memtable. When the total usage exceeds the limit, RocksDB may start dropping immutable memtables (which is also called trimming history), starting from the oldest one.
The semantics of the old option actually works both as an upper bound and lower bound. History trimming will start if number of immutable memtables exceeds the limit, but it will never go below (limit-1) due to history trimming.
In order the mimic the behavior with the new option, history trimming will stop if dropping the next immutable memtable causes the total memory usage go below the size limit. For example, assuming the size limit is set to 64MB, and there are 3 immutable memtables with sizes of 20, 30, 30. Although the total memory usage is 80MB > 64MB, dropping the oldest memtable will reduce the memory usage to 60MB < 64MB, so in this case no memtable will be dropped.
Maysam Yabandeh 208556ee13 WritePrepared: fix Get without snapshot (#5664)
Summary:
if read_options.snapshot is not set, ::Get will take the last sequence number after taking a super-version and uses that as the sequence number. Theoretically max_eviceted_seq_ could advance this sequence number. This could lead ::IsInSnapshot that will be invoked by the ReadCallback to notice the absence of the snapshot. In this case, the ReadCallback should have passed a non-value to snap_released so that it could be set by the ::IsInSnapshot. The patch does that, and adds a unit test to verify it.
Mike Kolupaev b4d7209428 Add an option to put first key of each sst block in the index (#5289)
Summary:
The first key is used to defer reading the data block until this file gets to the top of merging iterator's heap. For short range scans, most files never make it to the top of the heap, so this change can reduce read amplification by a lot sometimes.
Consider the following workload. There are a few data streams (we'll be calling them "logs"), each stream consisting of a sequence of blobs (we'll be calling them "records"). Each record is identified by log ID and a sequence number within the log. RocksDB key is concatenation of log ID and sequence number (big endian). Reads are mostly relatively short range scans, each within a single log. Writes are mostly sequential for each log, but writes to different logs are randomly interleaved. Compactions are disabled; instead, when we accumulate a few tens of sst files, we create a new column family and start writing to it.
So, a typical sst file consists of a few ranges of blocks, each range corresponding to one log ID (we use FlushBlockPolicy to cut blocks at log boundaries). A typical read would go like this. First, iterator Seek() reads one block from each sst file. Then a series of Next()s move through one sst file (since writes to each log are mostly sequential) until the subiterator reaches the end of this log in this sst file; then Next() switches to the next sst file and reads sequentially from that, and so on. Often a range scan will only return records from a small number of blocks in small number of sst files; in this case, the cost of initial Seek() reading one block from each file may be bigger than the cost of reading the actually useful blocks.
Neither iterate_upper_bound nor bloom filters can prevent reading one block from each file in Seek(). But this PR can: if the index contains first key from each block, we don't have to read the block until this block actually makes it to the top of merging iterator's heap, so for short range scans we won't read any blocks from most of the sst files.
This PR does the deferred block loading inside value() call. This is not ideal: there's no good way to report an IO error from inside value(). As discussed with siying offline, it would probably be better to change InternalIterator's interface to explicitly fetch deferred value and get status. I'll do it in a separate PR.
Jermy Li c92c58f84d JNI: Do not create 8M block cache for negative blockCacheSize values (#5465)
Summary:
As [BlockBasedTableConfig setBlockCacheSize()](1966a7c055/java/src/main/java/org/rocksdb/BlockBasedTableConfig.java (L728)) said, If cacheSize is non-positive, then cache will not be used. but when we configure a negative number or 0, there is an unexpected result: the block cache becomes 8M.
- Allow 0 as a valid size. When block cache size is 0, an 8MB block cache is created, as it is the default C++ API behavior. Also updated the comment.
- Set no_block_cache true if negative value is passed to block cache size, and no block cache will be created.
This PR adds public `GetStatsHistory` API to retrieve stats history in the form of an std map. The key of the map is the timestamp in microseconds when the stats snapshot is taken, the value is another std map from stats name to stats value (stored in std string). Two DBOptions are introduced: `stats_persist_period_sec` (default 10 minutes) controls the intervals between two snapshots are taken; `max_stats_history_count` (default 10) controls the max number of history snapshots to keep in memory. RocksDB will stop collecting stats snapshots if `stats_persist_period_sec` is set to 0.
Summary:
When adding CompactionFilter and CompactionFilterFactory settings to the Java layer, ColumnFamilyOptions was modified directly instead of ColumnFamilyOptionsInterface. This meant that the old-stye Options monolith was left behind.
This patch fixes that, by:
- promoting the CompactionFilter + CompactionFilterFactory setters from ColumnFamilyOptions -> ColumnFamilyOptionsInterface
- adding getters in ColumnFamilyOptionsInterface
- implementing setters in Options
- implementing getters in both ColumnFamilyOptions and Options
- adding testcases
- reusing a test CompactionFilterFactory by moving it to a common location
Maysam Yabandeh b878f93c70 Extend Transaction::GetForUpdate with do_validate (#4680)
Summary:
Transaction::GetForUpdate is extended with a do_validate parameter with default value of true. If false it skips validating the snapshot (if there is any) before doing the read. After the read it also returns the latest value (expects the ReadOptions::snapshot to be nullptr). This allows RocksDB applications to use GetForUpdate similarly to how InnoDB does. Similarly ::Merge, ::Put, ::Delete, and ::SingleDelete are extended with assume_exclusive_tracked with default value of false. It true it indicates that call is assumed to be after a ::GetForUpdate(do_validate=false).
The Java APIs are accordingly updated.
Soli Como 5945e16dfc Divide `NO_ITERATORS` into two counters `NO_ITERATOR_CREATED` and `NO_ITERATOR_DELETE` (#4498)
Summary:
Currently, `Statistics` can record tick by `recordTick()` whose second parameter is an `uint64_t`.
That means tick can only increase.
If we want to reduce tick, we have to work around like `RecordTick(statistics_, NO_ITERATORS, uint64_t(-1));`.
That's kind of a hack.
So, this PR divide `NO_ITERATORS` into two counters `NO_ITERATOR_CREATED` and `NO_ITERATOR_DELETE`, making the counters increase only.
Summary:
Closes https://github.com/facebook/rocksdb/issues/4195
CompactRangeOptions are available the CPP API, but not in the Java API. This PR adds CompactRangeOptions to the Java API and adds an overloaded compactRange() method. See https://github.com/facebook/rocksdb/issues/4195 for the original discussion.
This change supports all fields of CompactRangeOptions, including the required enum converters in the JNI portal.
Significant changes:
- Make CompactRangeOptions available in the compactRange() for Java.
- Deprecate other compactRange() methods that have individual option params, like in the CPP code.
- Migrate rocksdb_compactrange_helper() to  CompactRangeOptions.
- Add Java unit tests for CompactRangeOptions.
Manuel Ung b9846370e9 WriteUnPrepared: Add support for recovering WriteUnprepared transactions (#4078)
Summary:
This adds support for recovering WriteUnprepared transactions through the following changes:
- The information in `RecoveredTransaction` is extended so that it can reference multiple batches.
- `MarkBeginPrepare` is extended with a bool indicating whether it is an unprepared begin, and this is passed down to `InsertRecoveredTransaction` to indicate whether the current transaction is prepared or not.
- `WriteUnpreparedTxnDB::Initialize` is overridden so that it will rollback unprepared transactions from the recovered transactions. This can be done without updating the prepare heap/commit map, because this is before the DB has finished initializing, and after writing the rollback batch, those data structures should not contain information about the rolled back transaction anyway.
Commit/Rollback of live transactions is still unimplemented and will come later.
Implementing this for [Rocksandra](https://github.com/instagram/cassandra/tree/rocks_3.0), but this feature has been requested by many java api users over the years.
Adam Retter c5302a8a58 Java wrapper for Native Comparators
Summary:
This is an abstraction for working with custom Comparators implemented in native C++ code from Java. Native code must directly extend `rocksdb::Comparator`. When the native code comparator is compiled into the RocksDB codebase, you can then create a Java Class, and JNI stub to wrap it.
Useful if the C++/JNI barrier overhead is too much for your applications comparator performance.
An example is provided in `java/rocksjni/native_comparator_wrapper_test.cc` and `java/src/main/java/org/rocksdb/NativeComparatorWrapperTest.java`.
zawlazaw 57fcdc264a added missing subcodes and improved error message for missing enum values
Summary:
Java's `Status.SubCode` was out of sync with `include/rocksdb/status.h:SubCode`.
When running out of disc space this led to an `IllegalArgumentException` because of an invalid status code, rather than just returning the corresponding status code without an exception.
I added the missing status codes.
By this, we keep the behaviour of throwing an `IllegalArgumentException` in case of newly added status codes that are defined in C but not in Java.
We could think of an alternative strategy: add in Java another code "UnknownCode" which acts as a catch-all for all those status codes that are not yet mirrored from C to Java. This approach would never throw an exception but simply return a non-OK status-code.
I think the current approach of throwing an Exception in case of a C/Java inconsistency is fine, but if you have some opinion on the alternative strategy, then feel free to comment here.
Pengchao Wang e4234fbdcf collecting kValue type tombstone
Summary:
In our testing cluster, we found large amount tombstone has been promoted to kValue type from kMerge after reaching the top level of compaction. Since we used to only collecting tombstone in merge operator, those tombstones can never be collected.
This PR addresses the issue by adding a GC step in compaction filter, which is only for kValue type records. Since those record already reached the top of compaction (no earlier data exists) we can safely remove them in compaction filter without worrying old data appears.
This PR also removes an old optimization in cassandra merge operator for single merge operands.  We need to do GC even on a single operand, so the optimation does not make sense anymore.
Ben Clay 382277d0fe JNI support for ReadOptions::iterate_upper_bound
Summary:
Plumbed ReadOptions::iterate_upper_bound through JNI.
Made the following design choices:
* Used Slice instead of AbstractSlice due to the anticipated usecase (key / key prefix). Can change this if anyone disagrees.
* Used Slice instead of raw byte[] which seemed cleaner but necessitated the package-private handle-based Slice constructor. Followed WriteBatch as an example.
* We need a copy constructor for ReadOptions, as we create one base ReadOptions for a particular usecase and clone -> change the iterate_upper_bound on each slice operation. Shallow copy seemed cleanest.
* Hold a reference to the upper bound slice on ReadOptions, in contrast to Snapshot.
zawlazaw 044a71e27e Add iterator's SeekForPrev functionality to the java-api
Summary:
As discussed in #2742 , this pull-requests brings the iterator's [SeekForPrev()](https://github.com/facebook/rocksdb/wiki/SeekForPrev) functionality to the java-api. It affects all locations in the code where previously only Seek() was supported.
All code changes are essentially a copy & paste of the already existing implementations for Seek().
**Please Note**: the changes to the C++ code were applied without fully understanding its effect, so please take a closer look. However, since Seek() and SeekForPrev() provide exactly the same signature, I do not expect any mistake here.
The java-tests are extended by new tests for the additional functionality.
Compilation (`make rocksdbjavastatic`) and test (`java/make test`) run without errors.
Chen Shen 78cb6b6112 Provide byte[] version of SstFileWriter.merge to reduce GC Stall
Summary:
In Java API, `SstFileWriter.put/merge/delete` takes `Slice` type of key and value, which is a Java wrapper object around C++ Slice object.  The Slice object inherited [ `finalize`](3c327ac2d0/java/src/main/java/org/rocksdb/AbstractNativeReference.java (L69)) method, which [added huge overhead](https://softwareengineering.stackexchange.com/questions/288715/is-overriding-object-finalize-really-bad/288753#288753) to JVM while creating new SstFile.
To address this issue, this PR overload the merge method to take Java byte array instead of the Slice object, and added unit test for it.
We also benchmark these two different merge function, where we could see GC Stall reduced from 50%  to 1%, and the throughput increased from 50MB to 200MB.
* Implement CassandraCompactionFilter to remove expired columns and rows (if all column expired)
* Move cassandra related code from utilities/merge_operators/cassandra to utilities/cassandra/*
* Switch to use shared_ptr<> from uniqu_ptr for Column membership management in RowValue. Since columns do have multiple owners in Merge and GC process, use shared_ptr helps make RowValue immutable.
Adam Retter a5cc7ecec4 Facility for cross-building RocksJava using Docker
Summary:
As an alternative to Vagrant, we can now also use Docker to cross-build RocksDB. The advantages are:
1. The Docker images are fixed; they include all the latest updates and build tools.
2. The Vagrant image, required scripts that ran for every build that would update CentOS and install the buildtools. This lead to slow repeatable builds, we don't need to do this with Docker as they are already in the provided images.
The Docker images I have used have their Docker build files here: https://github.com/evolvedbinary/docker-rocksjava and the images themselves are available from Docker hub: https://hub.docker.com/r/evolvedbinary/rocksjava/
I have added the following targets to the `Makefile`:
1. `rocksdbjavastaticreleasedocker` this uses Docker to perform the cross-builds. It is basically the Docker version of the existing Vagrant `rocksdbjavastaticrelease` target.
2. `rocksdbjavastaticpublishdocker` delegates to `rocksdbjavastaticreleasedocker` and then `rocksdbjavastaticpublishcentral` to upload the artiacts to Maven Central. Equivalent to the existing Vagrant target: `rocksdbjavastaticpublish`
Right now, building rocksdbjava in PowerPC is broken due to JNI library name. I figured it out that "uname -m" and java's os.arch matches in PowerPC architecture. I made use of this advantage to fix the issue. More info can found from this issue  --> https://github.com/facebook/rocksdb/issues/1317
Adam Retter c6d464a9da Fixed various memory leaks and Java 8 JNI Compatibility
Summary:
I have manually audited the entire RocksJava code base.
Sorry for the large pull-request, I have broken it down into many small atomic commits though.
My initial intention was to fix the warnings that appear when running RocksJava on Java 8 with `-Xcheck:jni`, for example when running `make jtest` you would see many errors similar to:
```
WARNING in native method: JNI call made without checking exceptions when required to from CallObjectMethod
WARNING in native method: JNI call made without checking exceptions when required to from CallVoidMethod
WARNING in native method: JNI call made without checking exceptions when required to from CallStaticVoidMethod
...
```
A few of those warnings still remain, however they seem to come directly from the JVM and are not directly related to RocksJava; I am in contact with the OpenJDK hostpot-dev mailing list about these - http://mail.openjdk.java.net/pipermail/hotspot-dev/2017-February/025981.html.
As a result of fixing these, I realised we were not r
Islam AbdelRahman 869ae5d786 Support IngestExternalFile (remove AddFile restrictions)
Summary:
Changes in the diff
API changes:
- Introduce IngestExternalFile to replace AddFile (I think this make the API more clear)
- Introduce IngestExternalFileOptions (This struct will encapsulate the options for ingesting the external file)
- Deprecate AddFile() API
Logic changes:
- If our file overlap with the memtable we will flush the memtable
- We will find the first level in the LSM tree that our file key range overlap with the keys in it
- We will find the lowest level in the LSM tree above the the level we found in step 2 that our file can fit in and ingest our file in it
- We will assign a global sequence number to our new file
- Remove AddFile restrictions by using global sequence numbers
Other changes:
- Refactor all AddFile logic to be encapsulated in ExternalSstFileIngestionJob
Test Plan:
