Levi Tamasi d83542ca83 Make it possible to apply only a subrange of table property collectors (#8298)
Summary:
This patch does two things:
1) Introduces some aliases in order to eliminate/prevent long-winded type names
w/r/t the internal table property collectors (see e.g.
`std::vector<std::unique_ptr<IntTblPropCollectorFactory>>`).
2) Makes it possible to apply only a subrange of table property collectors during
table building by turning `TableBuilderOptions::int_tbl_prop_collector_factories`
from a pointer to a `vector` into a range (i.e. a pair of iterators).

Rationale: I plan to introduce a BlobDB related table property collector, which
should only be applied during table creation if blob storage is enabled at the moment
(which can be changed dynamically). This change will make it possible to include/
exclude the BlobDB related collector as needed without having to introduce
a second `vector` of collectors in `ColumnFamilyData` with pretty much the same
contents.

mrambacher 8948dc8524 Make ImmutableOptions struct that inherits from ImmutableCFOptions and ImmutableDBOptions (#8262)
Summary:
The ImmutableCFOptions contained a bunch of fields that belonged to the ImmutableDBOptions. This change cleans that up by introducing an ImmutableOptions struct. Following the pattern of Options struct, this class inherits from the DB and CFOption structs (of the Immutable form).

Only one structural change (the ImmutableCFOptions::fs was changed to a shared_ptr from a raw one) is in this PR. All of the other changes involve moving the member variables from the ImmutableCFOptions into the ImmutableOptions and changing member variables or function parameters as required for compilation purposes.

Follow-on PRs may do a further clean-up of the code, such as renaming variables (such as "ImmutableOptions cf_options") and potentially eliminating un-needed function parameters (there is no longer a need to pass both an ImmutableDBOptions and an ImmutableOptions to a function).

Peter Dillinger d2ca04e3ed Add more LSM info to FilterBuildingContext (#8246)
Summary:
Add `num_levels`, `is_bottommost`, and table file creation
`reason` to `FilterBuildingContext`, in anticipation of more powerful
Bloom-like filter support.

To support this, added `is_bottommost` and `reason` to
`TableBuilderOptions`, which allowed removing `reason` parameter from
`rocksdb::BuildTable`.

I attempted to remove `skip_filters` from `TableBuilderOptions`, because
filter construction decisions should arise from options, not one-off
parameters. I could not completely remove it because the public API for
SstFileWriter takes a `skip_filters` parameter, and translating this
into an option change would mean awkwardly replacing the table_factory
if it is BlockBasedTableFactory with new filter_policy=nullptr option.
I marked this public skip_filters option as deprecated because of this
oddity. (skip_filters on the read side probably makes sense.)

At least `skip_filters` is now largely hidden for users of
`TableBuilderOptions` and is no longer used for implementing the
optimize_filters_for_hits option. Bringing the logic for that option
closer to handling of FilterBuildingContext makes it more obvious that
hese two are using the same notion of "bottommost." (Planned:
configuration options for Bloom-like filters that generalize
`optimize_filters_for_hits`)

Recommended follow-up: Try to get away from "bottommost level" naming of
things, which is inaccurate (see
VersionStorageInfo::RangeMightExistAfterSortedRun), and move to
"bottommost run" or just "bottommost."

Pull Request resolved: https://github.com/facebook/rocksdb/pull/8246

Test Plan:
extended an existing unit test to exercise and check various
filter building contexts. Also, existing tests for
optimize_filters_for_hits validate some of the "bottommost" handling,
which is now closely connected to FilterBuildingContext::is_bottommost
through TableBuilderOptions::is_bottommost

Peter Dillinger 85becd94c1 Refactor: use TableBuilderOptions to reduce parameter lists (#8240)
Summary:
Greatly reduced the not-quite-copy-paste giant parameter lists
of rocksdb::NewTableBuilder, rocksdb::BuildTable,
BlockBasedTableBuilder::Rep ctor, and BlockBasedTableBuilder ctor.

Moved weird separate parameter `uint32_t column_family_id` of
TableFactory::NewTableBuilder into TableBuilderOptions.

Re-ordered parameters to TableBuilderOptions ctor, so that `uint64_t
target_file_size` is not randomly placed between uint64_t timestamps
(was easy to mix up).

Replaced a couple of fields of BlockBasedTableBuilder::Rep with a
FilterBuildingContext. The motivation for this change is making it
easier to pass along more data into new fields in FilterBuildingContext
(follow-up PR).

anand76 afa2420c2b Introduce a new storage specific Env API (#5761)
Summary:
The current Env API encompasses both storage/file operations, as well as OS related operations. Most of the APIs return a Status, which does not have enough metadata about an error, such as whether its retry-able or not, scope (i.e fault domain) of the error etc., that may be required in order to properly handle a storage error. The file APIs also do not provide enough control over the IO SLA, such as timeout, prioritization, hinting about placement and redundancy etc.

This PR separates out the file/storage APIs from Env into a new FileSystem class. The APIs are updated to return an IOStatus with metadata about the error, as well as to take an IOOptions structure as input in order to allow more control over the IO.

The user can set both ```options.env``` and ```options.file_system``` to specify that RocksDB should use the former for OS related operations and the latter for storage operations. Internally, a ```CompositeEnvWrapper``` has been introduced that inherits from ```Env``` and redirects individual methods to either an ```Env``` implementation or the ```FileSystem``` as appropriate. When options are sanitized during ```DB::Open```, ```options.env``` is replaced with a newly allocated ```CompositeEnvWrapper``` instance if both env and file_system have been specified. This way, the rest of the RocksDB code can continue to function as before.

This PR also ports PosixEnv to the new API by splitting it into two - PosixEnv and PosixFileSystem. PosixEnv is defined as a sub-class of CompositeEnvWrapper, and threading/time functions are overridden with Posix specific implementations in order to avoid an extra level of indirection.

The ```CompositeEnvWrapper``` translates ```IOStatus``` return code to ```Status```, and sets the severity to ```kSoftError``` if the io_status is retryable. The error handling code in RocksDB can then recover the DB automatically.

Shobhit Dayal b45b1cde3e Feature for sampling and reporting compressibility (#4842)
Summary:
This is a feature to sample data-block compressibility and and report them as stats. 1 in N (tunable) blocks is sampled for compressibility using two algorithms:
1. lz4 or snappy for fast compression
2. zstd or zlib for slow but higher compression.

The stats are reported to the caller as raw-bytes and compressed-bytes. The block continues to be compressed for storage using the specified CompressionType.

The db_bench_tool how has a command line option for specifying the sampling rate. It's default value is 0 (no sampling). To test the overhead for a certain value, users can compare the performance of db_bench_tool, varying the sampling rate. It is unlikely to have a noticeable impact for high values like 20.

Abhishek Madan eaaf1a6f05 Promote rocksdb.{deleted.keys,merge.operands} to main table properties (#4594)
Summary:
Since the number of range deletions are reported in
TableProperties, it is confusing to not report the number of merge
operands and point deletions as top-level properties; they are
accessible through the public API, but since they are not the "main"
properties, they do not appear in aggregated table properties, or the
string representation of table properties.

This change promotes those two property keys to
`rocksdb/table_properties.h`, adds corresponding uint64 members for
them, deprecates the old access methods `GetDeletedKeys()` and
`GetMergeOperands()` (though they are still usable for now), and removes
`InternalKeyPropertiesCollector`. The property key strings are the same
as before this change, so this should be able to read DBs written from older
versions (though I haven't tested this yet).

Zhongyi Xie 80bc35927c Should only decode restart points for uncompressed blocks (#3996)
Summary:
The Block object assumes contents are uncompressed. Block's constructor tries to read the number of restarts, but does not get an accurate number when its contents are compressed, which is causing issues like https://github.com/facebook/rocksdb/issues/3843.
This PR address this issue by skipping reconstruction of restart points when blocks are known to be compressed. Somehow the restart points can be read directly when Snappy is used and some tests (for example https://github.com/facebook/rocksdb/blob/master/db/db_block_cache_test.cc#L196) expects blocks to be fully constructed even when Snappy compression is used, so here we keep the restart point logic for Snappy.

Richard Cairns Jr f6e404c20a Added "number of merge operands" to statistics in ssts.
Summary:
A couple of notes from the diff:
  - The namespace block I added at the top of table_properties_collector.cc was in reaction to an issue i was having with PutVarint64 and reusing the "val" string. I'm not sure this is the cleanest way of doing this, but abstracting this out at least results in the correct behavior.
  - I chose "rocksdb.merge.operands" as the property name. I am open to suggestions for better names.
  - The change to sst_dump_tool.cc seems a bit inelegant to me. Is there a better way to do the if-else block?

Test Plan:
I added a test case in table_properties_collector_test.cc. It adds two merge operands and checks to make sure that both of them are reflected by GetMergeOperands. It also checks to make sure the wasPropertyPresent bool is properly set in the method.

Running both of these tests should pass:
./table_properties_collector_test
./sst_dump_test

Andrew Kryczka 2391ef7214 Embed column family name in SST file
Summary:
Added the column family name to the properties block. This property
is omitted only if the property is unavailable, such as when RepairDB()
writes SST files.

In a next diff, I will change RepairDB to use this new property for
deciding to which column family an existing SST file belongs. If this
property is missing, it will add it to the "unknown" column family (same
as its existing behavior).

Test Plan:
New unit test:

  $ ./db_table_properties_test --gtest_filter=DBTablePropertiesTest.GetColumnFamilyNameProperty

Summary: Pass column family ID through TablePropertiesCollectorFactory::CreateTablePropertiesCollector() so that users can identify which column family this file is for and handle it differently.

Test Plan: Add unit test scenarios in tests related to table properties collectors to verify the information passed in is correct.

Andres Noetzli 014fd55adc Support for SingleDelete()
Summary:
This patch fixes #7460559. It introduces SingleDelete as a new database
operation. This operation can be used to delete keys that were never
overwritten (no put following another put of the same key). If an overwritten
key is single deleted the behavior is undefined. Single deletion of a
non-existent key has no effect but multiple consecutive single deletions are
not allowed (see limitations).

In contrast to the conventional Delete() operation, the deletion entry is
removed along with the value when the two are lined up in a compaction. Note:
The semantics are similar to @igor's prototype that allowed to have this
behavior on the granularity of a column family (
https://reviews.facebook.net/D42093 ). This new patch, however, is more
aggressive when it comes to removing tombstones: It removes the SingleDelete
together with the value whenever there is no snapshot between them while the
older patch only did this when the sequence number of the deletion was older
than the earliest snapshot.

Most of the complex additions are in the Compaction Iterator, all other changes
should be relatively straightforward. The patch also includes basic support for
single deletions in db_stress and db_bench.

Limitations:
- Not compatible with cuckoo hash tables
- Single deletions cannot be used in combination with merges and normal
  deletions on the same key (other keys are not affected by this)
- Consecutive single deletions are currently not allowed (and older version of
  this patch supported this so it could be resurrected if needed)

Andres Notzli 193dc977e7 Fixing dead code in table_properties_collector_test
Summary:
There was a bug in table_properties_collector_test that this patch
is fixing: `!backward_mode && !test_int_tbl_prop_collector` in
TestCustomizedTablePropertiesCollector was never true, so the code
in the if-block never got executed. The reason is that the
CustomizedTablePropertiesCollector test was skipping tests with
`!backward_mode_ && !encode_as_internal`. The reason for skipping
the tests is unknown.

sdong 6e9fbeb27c Move rate_limiter, write buffering, most perf context instrumentation and most random kill out of Env
Summary: We want to keep Env a think layer for better portability. Less platform dependent codes should be moved out of Env. In this patch, I create a wrapper of file readers and writers, and put rate limiting, write buffering, as well as most perf context instrumentation and random kill out of Env. It will make it easier to maintain multiple Env in the future.

Test Plan: Run all existing unit tests.

sdong 953a885ebf A new call back to TablePropertiesCollector to allow users know the entry is add, delete or merge
Summary:
Currently users have no idea a key is add, delete or merge from TablePropertiesCollector call back. Add a new function to add it.

Also refactor the codes so that
(1) make table property collector and internal table property collector two separate data structures with the later one now exposed
(2) table builders only receive internal table properties

Test Plan: Add cases in table_properties_collector_test to cover both of old and new ways of using TablePropertiesCollector.

Igor Sugak b4b69e4f77 rocksdb: switch to gtest
Summary:
Our existing test notation is very similar to what is used in gtest. It makes it easy to adopt what is different.
In this diff I modify existing [[ https://code.google.com/p/googletest/wiki/Primer#Test_Fixtures:_Using_the_Same_Data_Configuration_for_Multiple_Te | test fixture ]] classes to inherit from `testing::Test`. Also for unit tests that use fixture class, `TEST` is replaced with `TEST_F` as required in gtest.

There are several custom `main` functions in our existing tests. To make this transition easier, I modify all `main` functions to fallow gtest notation. But eventually we can remove them and use implementation of `main` that gtest provides.

```lang=bash
% cat ~/transform
#!/bin/sh
files=$(git ls-files '*test\.cc')
for file in $files
do
  if grep -q "rocksdb::test::RunAllTests()" $file
  then
    if grep -Eq '^class \w+Test {' $file
    then
      perl -pi -e 's/^(class \w+Test) {/${1}: public testing::Test {/g' $file
      perl -pi -e 's/^(TEST)/${1}_F/g' $file
    fi
    perl -pi -e 's/(int main.*\{)/${1}::testing::InitGoogleTest(&argc, argv);/g' $file
    perl -pi -e 's/rocksdb::test::RunAllTests/RUN_ALL_TESTS/g' $file
  fi
done
% sh ~/transform
% make format
Second iteration of this diff contains only scripted changes.
Third iteration contains manual changes to fix last errors and make it compilable.
Test Plan:
Build and notice no errors.
```lang=bash
% USE_CLANG=1 make check -j55
```
Tests are still testing.
