Jeffery 62b62cf135 Fix CondVar::TimedWait for Windows (#12815)
Summary:
Based on https://github.com/microsoft/STL/issues/369
They fixed the issue in `std::condition_variable_any` but not in `std::condition_variable`, which is currently used in rocksdb repo. So we need to implement the work around regardless of `_MSVC_STL_UPDATE`.

Peter Dillinger 54cb9c77d9 Prefer static_cast in place of most reinterpret_cast (#12308)
Summary:
The following are risks associated with pointer-to-pointer reinterpret_cast:
* Can produce the "wrong result" (crash or memory corruption). IIRC, in theory this can happen for any up-cast or down-cast for a non-standard-layout type, though in practice would only happen for multiple inheritance cases (where the base class pointer might be "inside" the derived object). We don't use multiple inheritance a lot, but we do.
* Can mask useful compiler errors upon code change, including converting between unrelated pointer types that you are expecting to be related, and converting between pointer and scalar types unintentionally.

I can only think of some obscure cases where static_cast could be troublesome when it compiles as a replacement:
* Going through `void*` could plausibly cause unnecessary or broken pointer arithmetic. Suppose we have
`struct Derived: public Base1, public Base2`. If we have `Derived*` -> `void*` -> `Base2*` -> `Derived*` through reinterpret casts, this could plausibly work (though technical UB) assuming the `Base2*` is not dereferenced. Changing to static cast could introduce breaking pointer arithmetic.
* Unnecessary (but safe) pointer arithmetic could arise in a case like `Derived*` -> `Base2*` -> `Derived*` where before the Base2 pointer might not have been dereferenced. This could potentially affect performance.

With some light scripting, I tried replacing pointer-to-pointer reinterpret_casts with static_cast and kept the cases that still compile. Most occurrences of reinterpret_cast have successfully been changed (except for java/ and third-party/). 294 changed, 257 remain.

A couple of related interventions included here:
* Previously Cache::Handle was not actually derived from in the implementations and just used as a `void*` stand-in with reinterpret_cast. Now there is a relationship to allow static_cast. In theory, this could introduce pointer arithmetic (as described above) but is unlikely without multiple inheritance AND non-empty Cache::Handle.
* Remove some unnecessary casts to void* as this is allowed to be implicit (for better or worse).

Most of the remaining reinterpret_casts are for converting to/from raw bytes of objects. We could consider better idioms for these patterns in follow-up work.

I wish there were a way to implement a template variant of static_cast that would only compile if no pointer arithmetic is generated, but best I can tell, this is not possible. AFAIK the best you could do is a dynamic check that the void* conversion after the static cast is unchanged.

Peter Dillinger 4e60663b31 Remove unnecessary, confusing 'extern' (#12300)
Summary:
In C++, `extern` is redundant in a number of cases:
* "Global" function declarations and definitions
* "Global" variable definitions when already declared `extern`

For consistency and simplicity, I've removed these in code that *we own*. In a couple of cases, I removed obsolete declarations, and for MagicNumber constants, I have consolidated the declarations into a header file (format.h)
as standard best practice would prescribe.

Levi Tamasi af7ae912e2 Fix potential ambiguities in/around port/sys_time.h (#10045)
Summary:
There are some time-related POSIX APIs that are not available on Windows
(e.g. `localtime_r`), which we have worked around by providing our own
implementations in `port/sys_time.h`. This workaround actually relies on
some ambiguity: on Windows, a call to `localtime_r` calls
`ROCKSDB_NAMESPACE::port::localtime_r` (which is pulled into
`ROCKSDB_NAMESPACE` by a using-declaration), while on other platforms
it calls the global `localtime_r`. This works fine as long as there is only one
candidate function; however, it breaks down when there is more than one
`localtime_r` visible in a scope.

The patch fixes this by introducing `ROCKSDB_NAMESPACE::port::{TimeVal, GetTimeOfDay, LocalTimeR}`
to eliminate any ambiguity.

Peter Dillinger 13ded69484 Built-in support for generating unique IDs, bug fix (#8708)
Summary:
Env::GenerateUniqueId() works fine on Windows and on POSIX
where /proc/sys/kernel/random/uuid exists. Our other implementation is
flawed and easily produces collision in a new multi-threaded test.
As we rely more heavily on DB session ID uniqueness, this becomes a
serious issue.

This change combines several individually suitable entropy sources
for reliable generation of random unique IDs, with goal of uniqueness
and portability, not cryptographic strength nor maximum speed.

Specifically:
* Moves code for getting UUIDs from the OS to port::GenerateRfcUuid
rather than in Env implementation details. Callers are now told whether
the operation fails or succeeds.
* Adds an internal API GenerateRawUniqueId for generating high-quality
128-bit unique identifiers, by combining entropy from three "tracks":
  * Lots of info from default Env like time, process id, and hostname.
  * std::random_device
  * port::GenerateRfcUuid (when working)
* Built-in implementations of Env::GenerateUniqueId() will now always
produce an RFC 4122 UUID string, either from platform-specific API or
by converting the output of GenerateRawUniqueId.

DB session IDs now use GenerateRawUniqueId while DB IDs (not as
critical) try to use port::GenerateRfcUuid but fall back on
GenerateRawUniqueId with conversion to an RFC 4122 UUID.

GenerateRawUniqueId is declared and defined under env/ rather than util/
or even port/ because of the Env dependency.

Likely follow-up: enhance GenerateRawUniqueId to be faster after the
first call and to guarantee uniqueness within the lifetime of a single
process (imparting the same property onto DB session IDs).

Pull Request resolved: https://github.com/facebook/rocksdb/pull/8708

Test Plan:
A new mini-stress test in env_test checks the various public
and internal APIs for uniqueness, including each track of
GenerateRawUniqueId individually. We can't hope to verify anywhere close
to 128 bits of entropy, but it can at least detect flaws as bad as the
old code. Serial execution of the new tests takes about 350 ms on
my machine.

Koby Kahane 3e745053b7 Fix MSVC-related build issues (#7439)
Summary:
This PR addresses some build and functional issues on MSVC targets, as a step towards an eventual goal of having RocksDB build successfully for Windows on ARM64.

Addressed issues include:
- BitsSetToOne and CountTrailingZeroBits do not compile on non-x64 MSVC targets. A fallback implementation of BitsSetToOne when Intel intrinsics are not available is added, based on the C++20 `<bit>` popcount implementation in Microsoft's STL.
- The implementation of FloorLog2 for MSVC targets (including x64) gives incorrect results. The unit test easily detects this, but CircleCI is currently configured to only run a specific set of tests for Windows CMake builds, so this seems to have been unnoticed.
- AsmVolatilePause does not use YieldProcessor on Windows ARM64 targets, even though it is available.
- When CondVar::TimedWait calls Microsoft STL's condition_variable::wait_for, it can potentially trigger a bug (just recently fixed in the upcoming VS 16.8's STL) that deadlocks various tests that wait for a timer to execute, since `Timer::Run` doesn't get a chance to execute before being blocked by the test function acquiring the mutex.
- In c_test, `GetTempDir` assumes a POSIX-style temp path.
- `NormalizePath` did not eliminate consecutive POSIX-style path separators on Windows, resulting in test failures in e.g., wal_manager_test.
- Various other test failures.

In a followup PR I hope to modify CircleCI's config.yml to invoke all RocksDB unit tests in Windows CMake builds with CTest, instead of the current use of `run_ci_db_test.ps1` which requires individual tests to be specified and is missing many of the existing tests.

Notes from peterd: FloorLog2 is not yet used in production code (it's for something in progress). I also added a few more inexpensive platform-dependent tests to Windows CircleCI runs. And included facebook/folly#1461 as requested

Wilfried Goesgens 5d809ecef7 Add compile time option to work with utf8 filename strings (#4469)
Summary:
The default behaviour of rocksdb is to use the `*A(` windows API functions.
These accept filenames in the currently configured system encoding,
be it Latin 1, utf8 or whatever.
If the Application intends to completely work with utf8 strings internally,
converting these to that codepage properly isn't even always possible.
Thus this patch adds a switch to use the `*W(` functions, which accept
UTF-16 filenames, and uses C++11 features to translate the
UTF8 containing std::string to an UTF16 containing std::wstring.

This feature is a compile time options, that can be enabled by setting `WITH_WINDOWS_UTF8_FILENAMES` to true.

Nathan Bronson 7d87f02799 support for concurrent adds to memtable
Summary:
This diff adds support for concurrent adds to the skiplist memtable
implementations. Memory allocation is made thread-safe by the addition of
a spinlock, with small per-core buffers to avoid contention. Concurrent
memtable writes are made via an additional method and don't impose a
performance overhead on the non-concurrent case, so parallelism can be
selected on a per-batch basis.

Write thread synchronization is an increasing bottleneck for higher levels
of concurrency, so this diff adds --enable_write_thread_adaptive_yield
(default off). This feature causes threads joining a write batch
group to spin for a short time (default 100 usec) using sched_yield,
rather than going to sleep on a mutex. If the timing of the yield calls
indicates that another thread has actually run during the yield then
spinning is avoided. This option improves performance for concurrent
situations even without parallel adds, although it has the potential to
increase CPU usage (and the heuristic adaptation is not yet mature).

Parallel writes are not currently compatible with
inplace updates, update callbacks, or delete filtering.
Enable it with --allow_concurrent_memtable_write (and
--enable_write_thread_adaptive_yield). Parallel memtable writes
are performance neutral when there is no actual parallelism, and in
my experiments (SSD server-class Linux and varying contention and key
sizes for fillrandom) they are always a performance win when there is
more than one thread.

Statistics are updated earlier in the write path, dropping the number
of DB mutex acquisitions from 2 to 1 for almost all cases.

This diff was motivated and inspired by Yahoo's cLSM work. It is more
conservative than cLSM: RocksDB's write batch group leader role is
preserved (along with all of the existing flush and write throttling
logic) and concurrent writers are blocked until all memtable insertions
have completed and the sequence number has been advanced, to preserve
linearizability.

My test config is "db_bench -benchmarks=fillrandom -threads=$T
-batch_size=1 -memtablerep=skip_list -value_size=100 --num=1000000/$T
-level0_slowdown_writes_trigger=9999 -level0_stop_writes_trigger=9999
-disable_auto_compactions --max_write_buffer_number=8
-max_background_flushes=8 --disable_wal --write_buffer_size=160000000
--block_size=16384 --allow_concurrent_memtable_write" on a two-socket
Xeon E5-2660 @ 2.2Ghz with lots of memory and an SSD hard drive. With 1
thread I get ~440Kops/sec. Peak performance for 1 socket (numactl
-N1) is slightly more than 1Mops/sec, at 16 threads. Peak performance
across both sockets happens at 30 threads, and is ~900Kops/sec, although
with fewer threads there is less performance loss when the system has
background work.

Test Plan:
1. concurrent stress tests for InlineSkipList and DynamicBloom
2. make clean; make check
3. make clean; DISABLE_JEMALLOC=1 make valgrind_check; valgrind db_bench

made use of the QueryPerformanceCounter to return microseconds values that do not repeat
as std::chrono::system_clock returned values that made auto_roll_logger_test fail.

The interface documentation does not state that we need to return
system time describing the return value as a number of microsecs since some
moment in time. However, because on Linux it is implemented using gettimeofday
various pieces of code (such as GenericRateLimiter) took advantage of that
and make use of NowMicros() as a system timestamp. Thus the previous change
 broke rate_limiter_test on Windows.

In addition, the interface name NowMicros() suggests that it is actually
a timestamp so people use it as such.

This change makes use of the new system call on Windows that returns
system time with required precision. This change preserves the fix
 for auto_roll_logger_test and fixes rate_limiter_test.

Note that DBTest.RateLimitingTest still fails due to a separately reported issue.

Dmitri Smirnov d8586ab22b All of these are in the new code added past 3.10
1) Crash in env_win.cc that prevented db_test run to completion and some new tests
     2) Fix new corruption tests in DBTest by allowing a shared trunction of files. Note that this is generally needed ONLY for tests.
     3) Close database so WAL is closed prior to inducing corruption similar to what we did within Corruption tests.
